Receiving Cattle Management Tips

For quick reference, following are some general guidelines for receiving cattle management. You may want to share these guidelines with employees, and/or use them to double check you current practices.

Day 1:

  1. Provide clean, dry, comfortable pens with plenty of fresh water and good quality hay.
  2. Check the pens for sick calves. Examine and treat accordingly or reject as allowed under the sales contract.
  3. Introduce the starter ration containing Diamond V XPTM Yeast Culture to supply two ounces of yeast culture per head per day.*
  4. Following a reasonable rest period, the calves should be:
    1. Tagged or branded.
    2. Dewormed and deloused.
    3. Implanted.
    4. Vaccinated. Diseases to consider:
      1. I.B.R., B.V.D., P.I.3, B.R.S.V.
      2. Clostridium-3, 5, or 7 way
      3. Leptospirosis-5 way
      4. Haemophilus somnus
      5. Pasteurella

After Day 1:

  1. Check the pens 2 to 3 times daily for sick calves, examine and treat accordingly.
  2. Maintain good records on treatments, re-treatments and responses.
  3. Top dress additional Diamond V XPTM Yeast Culture in the sick pen if feed intake is below normal.*
  4. Give booster shots according to the vaccination program recommended by the attending veterinarian 14 days following the initial inoculations.
  5. Maintain the starter ration containing Diamond V XPTM Yeast Culture to supply 2 ounces of yeast culture per head per day for 28 days.*
