The
ultimate goal of Diamond V Mills is to help you operate with increased
success. In our effort to help enhance your transition management and
operate as efficiently as possible, we’ve compiled the following
Transition Tips. Naturally, situations vary greatly from region to
region, so the tips are designed to serve as a general guideline only.
- Dry cows off at the body condition
score you want them to calve at.
- Treat problem mastitis cases at
dry-off, or all cows at dry-off if recommended by the attending
veterinarian.
- Manage internal and external parasites
and selenium supplementation as recommended by your
consultant/veterinarian.
- Maintain dry matter intake for the dry
cow at approximately 2% of body weight. Keep roughage levels high
and concentrate levels low as recommended by your
nutritionists/consultant/feed professional.
- Keep the level of fermented feeds as
low as possible in dry cow rations. Many metabolic problems are
related to excessive intake of fermented feedstuffs in the dry
period.
- To maximize antibody production for
the colostrum, boost the vaccination program recommended by the
attending veterinarian 3-4 weeks prefreshening.
- 3-4 weeks prefreshening, separate the
close-up dry cows and adjust the concentrate level of the ration as
recommended by your consultant/nutritionist/feed professional.
- Include Diamond V XP™ Yeast Culture
in the close-up dry cow ration at 2 ounces per cow per day.
- Monitor body condition scores and
udder development. Treat udder edema as necessary. Watch for
evidence of mastitis and treat accordingly.
- Cryptosporidia infection occurs at
calving and can be prevented by providing clean, dry, comfortable
calving facilities.
- Provide good quality colostrum to the
new born calf as recommended by the attending veterinarian.
- Adapt the cow to the fresh-cow ration
or the high-cow ration as recommended by your
nutritionist/consultant/feed professional.
- Increase the dose of Diamond V XP™
Yeast Culture to 4 ounces per cow per day for problem cows and when
forage quality is below normal.
